How to associate the .ica file type to open with a program Citrix Connection Manager.
The following programs exhibit specific behavior when it is associated with the ICA file:
  • Internet Explorer: Opens a window titled 'View Downloads - Internet Explorer' that includes the message 'Verify and track your downloads'. Then the launch.ica file will download every time you click the open button, but the window stays open and the program does not start.
  • Adobe Reader: Opens Adobe Reader and gives an error that the file was corrupted.
  • Chrome: It opens up a new tab with the text of the ica file.
  • Firefox: It opens up approximately a dozen tabs
If ICA files are associated with Internet Explorer, you will see a Downloads window similar to the one below, but clicking Open does not do anything.

Windows 7

  1. Click on the Windows Start button to open the Start menu
  2. On the right side of the menu, click Default Programs
  3. Click the second option, 'Associate a file type or protocol with a program'
  4. Scroll down and locate the .ica file extension in the left column.
  5. Double click on the line for the .ica extension.
  6. In the new window, click Browse.
  7. Look for a Citrix folder in the list of folders. If you do not see it, click on your C drive on the left side, and then open Program Files (x86).
  8. Open Citrix > ICA Client.
  9. Double-click on the WFCRun32 application (be careful not to select the Wfica32 application).
  10. Click OK to confirm the association with the Citrix Connection Manager.
  11. Click Close to close the Default Programs window and then close the Control Panel window.

Windows 8.1 and Windows 10

  1. Right-click the Windows icon in the bottom left corner of the screen and select Control Panel
  2. Click Default Programs. If you do not see it, use the search box in the upper-right corner of the window to search for Default Programs.
  3. Click Associate a file type or protocol with a program
    • NOTE: Some users may not be able to access the Associate a file type or protocol with a program menu. If this occurs, users will need to use the alternate Windows 10 procedure below.
  4. In the window that opens, scroll down and locate the .ica file extension in the left-hand column.
  5. Double click on the line for the .ica extension.
  6. In the new window that opens, click 'More apps'
    • If this option is not available and only directs you to the App Store, go back into the browser being used (such as Chrome) to press CTRL + J to open the Downloads for the browser. If More apps is available (not from the Microsoft app store), continue to Step 7.
    • Under the Launch.ica file last downloaded, click Show in Folder
    • When the folder opens, right-click on the Launch.ica file. Select Open with...
    • Continue with Step 7 below to select Look for another app on this PC
  7. Scroll to the bottom of the list and select 'Look for another app on this PC'
  8. Look for a Citrix folder in the list of folders. If you do not see it, click on your C drive on the left side and then open the Program Files (x86) folder.
  9. Open the Citrix folder, and then open the ICA Client folder
  10. Double-click on the WFCRun32 application (be careful not to select the Wfica32 application)
  11. Click OK to confirm the association with the Citrix Connection Manager
  12. Click Close to close the Default Programs window and then close the Control Panel window.
Alternate Windows 10 procedure:
  1. Navigate to your Downloads folder
  2. Locate a Launch.ica file and right-click it
  3. Select Open with...
  4. Click More apps
  5. Scroll to the bottom of the list and select 'Look for another app on this PC'
  6. Look for a Citrix folder in the list of folders. If you do not see it, click on your C drive on the left side and then open the Program Files (x86) folder.
  7. Open the Citrix folder, and then open the ICA Client folder
  8. Double-click on the WFCRun32 application (be careful not to select the Wfica32 application)
  9. Click OK to confirm the association with the Citrix Connection Manager
  10. Click Close to close the Default Programs window and then close the Control Panel window.

How to login to Citrix Apps

You must login to Citrix using your Novell username and password. If you are unable to login, go to the following link to change your Novell password: https://eic.fiu.edu/change-network-password/. There are two ways to utilize the EIC Apps remotely: you can download the Citrix client or log on through the web-based client. It is strongly recommended that you utilize the Citrix client, as not all EIC Apps work on the Web Interface.

USER NOTE: If the application asks you how many cores you would like to select, please do not choose more than two cores, as it will prevent it from running.

  1. Go to http://eicapps.eng.fiu.edu
  2. Login with your novell username and password.
  3. In the domain type: EICAD
  4. You can use all the applications that are available for you.
    **** If your password does not work with the Citrix client, you must change the password when you login to a computer that has the Novell client or use this website to change your password: https://eic.fiu.edu/change-network-password/
